Behind the Scenes: How I take an outfit photo

One of the questions I get asked almost daily is about how I take an outfit photo. When I started blogging, I would snap the photo in the mirror. This was fine, but I realised I already had the equipment and minions to take it to the next level.

Behind the Scenes: How I take an outfit photo

What you need:

  1. Camera that is remote friendly. I use a Nikon D40 with a Nikkor 35mm lens.
  2. Battery remote. I have a Nikon one but also bought a few extra ones from Ebay for about $2 each and these work just as well
  3. Tripod. Try to get one that is eye height. I use a Manfrotto that goes to about 165cm-170cm. I think it cost about $100 or $150. Very light and great for travelling.

This is so easy!

PS: One of my patient minions also gave me a lesson in iMovie. They are super handy!

  11. Umm, loving your gorgeous hair!! Kids get the best shots some times ;)x

  12. Ummm ok I’m the worlds biggest dummy! This post has made my day. I always get my 6 year old or my Husband to take outfit posts of me and they are always pretty crap…they are not professional photographers after all! I have a Nikon DSLR, I just never realised I could buy a remote for it! I have the tripod somewhere lurking away in my wardrobe. There are so many outfit posts I’m desperate to do but the timing never works out as Hubby is at work and the chickadee is at school. I honestly feel like a numpty not figuring out the whole remote/tripod thing sooner!

    • What a cool realisation! You are going to rock with your awesome photos now! Don’t forget to check ebay for remotes. I found great ones for so cheap and they work the same as my expensive ones.

  13. My dreams! Goal next year is camera and remote, my teenage minions do my pics all on iPhone but the freedom to set up wherever and whenever would be awesome! You always have the best pics!

  14. TOO cute! I want a minion!!
