My Laser Pigment Removal Experience

For the last few years decade I have noticed increased pigment and discolouration on my face and décolletage. I have been pretty great with sunscreen but not enough for me to travel back in time to 1990 and avoid suntanning.

My pigment and discolouration was easily minimised with makeup but on weekends I’m usually makeup free and thought about how nice would it be to see a slightly less patchy face in the mirror looking back at me.

So, my latest beauty experience at the Brisbane Anti Wrinkle & Skin Studio is laser pigment removal.

My Laser Pigment Removal Experience

When I mentioned that I was off to get this done, most people pulled a pained face or assumed I must be getting treated for hair removal on my face and chest. The pained face didn’t concern me too much because I have a pretty high tolerance for anything beauty related.

About to go in. Makeup free and excited. I was expecting a little pain and was completely okay with it.

My Laser Pigment Removal Experience

Was it painful?

Since it was my first session they started off on a pretty low setting. It was uncomfortable but completely manageable. There were moments of a slightly higher pain (like a muted, quick burn) but it was for very brief moments. Followed by a feeling of being sunburnt. This hot sunburn feeling lasts for about 30 minutes and then fades away. They recommend Skintitut Laser Aid to cool and sooth, which felt amazing. I then forgot about the treatment until my shower that night, when the area felt more sensitive to heat, so I turned down the shower and applied Laser Aid afterwards.

Immediately afterward the treatment you look red and patchy, almost like you are having a reaction to something. As you can see, my chest reacted more than my face. The technician applied Laser Aid and Age Defence 50+ SPF Sunscreen, so you look a bit shiny as well as red, but you are good to get to your car or even go grocery shopping.

My Laser Pigment Removal Experience

Day Two – five

The red fades within hours and when you wake up the next day the brown patches have arrived. For the next few days your pigment will be darker than before but I didn’t feel any discomfort at all. I just avoided low cut tops and wore my normal makeup. No-one seemed to notice the darker patches, or they weren’t interesting enough to comment on.

Week one – two

The brown fades and takes a significant amount of pigment and discolouration with it. My décolletage saw the most obvious results, probably because it was the most damaged. I was amazed with the results after just one treatment and I can not wait to see the results of a second treatment with a higher setting.

Laser Pigment Removal

Would I recommend it?

Yes, seriously excited about the results and I have already booked in for a second round.

Invisalign – Sponsored Post

My teeth are probably the one thing I receive the most compliments on. It’s probably because I’m usually talking or cackling laughing and they are right in your face plus a few years ago I had them improved with Invisalign treatment.

I’ve have always thought that nice, white teeth is one of the best ways to look healthy and youthful and a genuine smile instantly makes you more attractive and approachable.

My Invisalign treatment

Growing Up

Growing up, my teeth were slightly overcrowded. Sure they were strong and white but the front teeth overlapped a little and the bottom row was crooked. I was always self-conscious about them and usually had a tight, little smile to keep them covered. One person even commented that I always looked like I was sucking on a lemon. Nice!

My Invisalign Experience

About 8 years ago I decided to look into doing something about them. I didn’t want traditional braces and I was thinking of porcelain veneers but once reading about them I changed my mind pretty quickly. My dentist mentioned Invisalign treatment. I had no idea what it was but when I looked into it I was very excited. It was exactly what I was looking for, something that didn’t jeopardise the health of my own teeth, was virtually invisible and, even better, was removable. I could still go to corporate events and not have to worry about wearing braces. Perfect!

After a consultation with my Orthodontist, they took moulds and created amazing online before and after images. There was no way I could resist after seeing them! It took about 7 months of switching my trays every two weeks and I ended up with the teeth I had always wanted. Reviewing Invisalign

Now my daughters are at the age where I’m looking into teeth options for them. They had plates as their teeth were growing in but in the near future, they might need a little more work. Hands down Invisalign treatment is my number one choice for them too. They love the idea and are particularly excited that they can just remove their tray for selfies with friends. Perfect for the modern teen!

Beauty: Laser Vein Removal Treatment

I’m thoroughly enjoying educating myself and discovering new beauty treatments. This week at the Brisbane Anti Wrinkle clinic I discovered laser vein removal treatment. For a few years I’ve had a couple of small veins or broken capillaries on the side of my nose that got worse after the removal of a basel cell carcinoma.

These small veins can be caused by quite a few things including, trauma, age, genetics, hormones, environment and medical conditions.

I could easily cover them with makeup but throughout the course of the day, they would reappear, giving me a just a slight redness on my nose – like I had cold. The veins were only small and didn’t concern me too much but I also didn’t know it has become so easy and quick to remove them.

Laser Vein Removal Treatment

They used Cutera’s Coolguide which, as the name suggests, cooly slides over your skin before delivering a sharp, warm prick pulse of light energy. It’s completely bearable and the results are instant! 5 minutes later I walked out of there will no little red veins.

How did I not know about this!

I don’t have a great before and after photos, because I didn’t take a before – I didn’t realise the results would be instantaneous! Here is a earlier photo, fully made up, at the beginning of the day but showing the slight redness popping through.

Have you noticed any small veins or broken capillaries? Do they bother you?

Quick Messy Summer Hair

Quicky messy hair is my go-to hair style. I don’t have the patience or the skill to do anything else. Lucky, a few years ago I taught myself how to do easy beachy waves (you can see the easy video here), else my go-to-do would be a top knot.

Quick Messy Summer Hair

I start with frizzy morning hair. I realise I would get a better result with a blow dry, but I don’t want to damage my hair further with extra heat and this saves time. Before I go to sleep I put some styling product in my hair so it’s ready for styling in the morning, then I give it a spritz of ghd heat protector.

then I grab my ghd platinum copper luxe to give some loose beachy waves – tutorial here.

ghd platinum cooper lux premium

Let the waves cool, then run your fingers through to break them up and look less like ‘sausage curls’

Then because I have very fine hair and not much of it, I will only need one bobby pin. Feel free to grab a few more if you’ve been blessed with a gorgeous mane.

I create a messy 1/2 up do by wrapping my hair around the pony, then loosen it out and give it a good spray with hair spray.

What’s your go-to-do?

Valentine’s Day: How to wear Soft Pink Makeup over 40

After all the sun, fake tan and bronzer of Summer, I love a little delicate, girly soft pink makeup. It’s such a pretty, youthful look. Yes, even for 40 plusers. It takes at least 3 years off your appearance. Three years!!

How to wear Soft Pink Makeup over 40

The trick is to let your skin be real. We have worked hard for our wrinkles, years of laughing, living and whatever else but, makeup doesn’t always appreciate the hard work and just decides to settle in and highlight them. So, go light on the foundation and concealer but create a nice base. There are a few great tips here.

My favourites pink products for achieving this gorgeous pinkness are:

Benefit Benetint Rose-tinted lip and cheek stain
I refuse to be swayed by the promise of rose-tinting and the delicious rose scent but the stain is a gorgeous colour. This is the colour your cheeks and lips go naturally when you are running across of grassy field in a Summer rain storm and Ryan Gosling is chasing you. It’s so freakin’ delicious, I want to add it to cocktails with rose petals and umbrellas.

L’Oreal Rose Symphony Colour Riche Lip Gloss
This is great when you want to pump up the volume a little. It’s thick opaque, high gloss, colour rich gloss but it’s not sticky or heavy. I swipe and then use my finger to disperse. The result is a natural pink colour with a sheen but if you want more impact, don’t rub it in.

NARS Orgasm
When the Rose-tinting isn’t enough, when Ryan Gosling isn’t there to chase you and you need a little more. This goldy-pink is … orgasmic. The gold isn’t too much for daytime but with just enough shine to make your cheeks look pump and delicious.

OPI Japanese Rose Garden
The prettiest pink nail polish. For when you need to point to the pink Champagne you’re ordering

  • First prepare a gorgeous base with primer, your favourite foundation and some simple contouring & highlighting
  • I tend to avoid pink eyeshadow when I am going for a pink look. I find that it’s too much pink and I feel like I look like a pink cupcake. I love a clean eye, soft brown eyeshadow with a little eyeliner and mascara
  • I avoid anything with sparkles or glitter, except for a little in the blush. I think it’s ageing around the eyes. BUT I do have times when I break this rule but that’s another post
  • Fill in the brows. Full brows are youthful. Think Demi Moore not John Howard
  • Layer your different blushes and lipsticks. This will help create depth and help it to stay in place longer.

Beauty: 5 Minute Makeup Tutorial {Sponsored}

With the Christmas party season around, I find myself applying more makeup, more often.

Today I am sharing my 5 minute makeup tutorial. I am a serious makeup lover, but I’m prone to a little laziness. After about 25 years of makeup wearing my laziness is paying off because when we are in our 40’s we often look better with lighter makeup.
5 Minute Makeup Tutorial

Beauty: 5 Minute Makeup Tutorial

I started with foundation, concealer and a wee little bit of contouring already applied (you can see that tutorial here). I had no choice because I had about 3 hours sleep last night and I look like an extra from Walking Dead. I kind of sound a little like one today too. No joke!

In case you decided to skip this video that I put hours into creating. The products I used, in order, are:

  • Inglot Eyeshadow Palette
  • L’Oreal Super Liner So Couture in black
  • NARS blush in Orgasm
  • Youngblood Eyebrow palette in dark
  • Benefit They’re Real Mascara
  • Carmex Lipgloss in pink

If you are looking for some more great quick makeup tips, I usually find some good ones on Yahoo! Beauty, like this 4 minute makeup.

How to create Beachy waves in 5 minutes

I have been watching my hairdresser create waves in my hair for years. I have tried many, many times to recreate them but always managed to create a half straight, half squarish bumps do.

About a month ago I decide it was time and I really went for it. I managed to burn myself quite a few times but by the third go I got it. Now, I’m not sure why it took me so long.

How to create Beachy waves in 5 minutes

When my hair is dry, it only takes about 5 minutes but I do have very fine hair. I use a ghd to create these waves. The new ghd V Sunset Styler is perfect and the colours are gorgeous:). Here is a little video showing how I create my beachy waves. You might notice I’m talking A LOT and it’s muted. I had to mute it because I’m telling filthy jokes the entire time and I wanted this to be suitable for work (not true, but it makes me sound way more interesting)

10 tips from the LOreal Paris Workshop

One of my absolute highlights of the PBEvent14 was the Thursday night L’Oréal Paris workshop. I love makeup, I love hanging with the girls and I love champagne and food. This evening combined all these awesome things!

Elsa Morgan, the L’Oréal Paris Makeup Director was sharing all her tips. She was so gorgeous, knowledgeable and charming. Serious girl crush material.

10 tips from the LOreal Paris Workshop - Elsa Morgan

10 tips from the LOreal Paris Workshop

  • Always do your eyebrows. If you only have 2 minutes to do your makeup, include the eyebrows. The Super Liner Brow Artist pencil makes it so easy. The pencil has the pencil at one end, wax pencil at the other and a brush on the lid. Three products in one
  • Use a highlighter pen or concealer to sharpen the shape of your brows. Just along the outer third of the brows.

  • Don’t be scared to use mascara on the lower lashes. Just one coat and it opens up your eyes
  • A little highlighter in the corner makes your eyes pop

  • Highlight your cupids bow with a white kohl or a highlighter pen before applying your lipstick. This makes your lips appear a little fuller and poutier
  • To create a matt lipstick. Hold a 1 ply tissue over your lips and give a gentle brush with translucent powder

  • Don’t be scared to use your fingers. Use them to warm up and massage product onto your face including primer and foundation
  • Layering products a little at a time is better than one big layer. This builds up colour and gives it longevity
  • Foundation creates a flat face, add bronzer and highlighter to add the shape back
  • Let your skin shine through. Don’t make makeup too heavy and mask like

After the tutorials, we all got the opportunity to get our makeup done by the lovely L’Oreal makeup artists.

My Lip product addiction

I usually carry a big handbag. It was getting a wee bit heaving and so I decided to clean it out.

I discovered a ridiculous amount of lip products.

My Lip product addiction

2 x Lipsticks
One is my absolute favourite Issada Lipstick crayon in Pirate and the other is a Youngblood lipstick that snapped off the first time I used it. I get angry looking at it. I’m going to move on, throw it out and release my anger.

4 x Lipglosses
I love lip glosses because they won’t melt in the heat and I don’t need a mirror to reapply. Two of these glosses I really dislike but they cost a bit so I force myself to wear them. Then when I catch a glimpse of my myself in a mirror, flinch and wipe it off. I will donate these two to my daughters play kits.

7 x Lipbalm
This is a little extreme. I wear lip balm a lot, so I guess I wasn’t surprised to find a few tubes but SEVEN! I will remove at least 5 and spread them around the house, so I will always have lip balm at arms reach.

My Lip product addiction

Be honest, how many lip products are living in your handbag at the moment?

5 Beauty Products to keep makeup in place

When I am planning a long day or night I want my makeup to stay put. After years of dancing up a storm, then looking in the mirror and realising you weren’t quite the goddess that left the house 6 hours ago. In fact, the image staring back is pretty scary.

Smudged Eyeliner
Faded Eyebrows
Eyeshadow in the creases
Makeup around your collar
Nude Lips
Wild hair

I can’t help with the hair but I can share the awesome products I use to keep my makeup where it should be.

5 Beauty Products to keep makeup in place

Start with clean, moisturised skin.

Benefit The PORE Professional
I how did I live without this product. This minimises the appearance of pores, makes your makeup smoother and last longer. I apply a pea sized amount all over my face avoiding the eye area. I apply after moisturiser and eye cream.

Benefit Stay Don’t Stray
This is great for the eye lids and under eye bags. A little goes a long way. I just apply 2 dots under the eye and one on top. Gently pat into place

Motives Eye base
This is when I’m serious about my makeup not going anywhere. Eyeshadow won’t settle in creases, it won’t slip down your face and it won’t fade away. It might not ever come off! I use my nail to dig out a teeny, little piece and then apply to my lid area up to my brow bone. This not only creates a great base but it’s also a nice neutral colour to use as your base colour.

Napoleon Perdis The One Concealer
I pat this over my under eye bags, over the top of the Benefit Stay Don’t Stray. This just works for me and is the right colour to counteract purply shadows

Motives Makeup Setting Spray
This shiz is da bomb. Not only does it set the makeup up, it makes you look amazing. You only need about 4 sprays and it’s stops makeup from settling into wrinkles and pores as the night progresses. It’s like airbrushing in a spray.

9 Ways to look less corpsey without makeup or jewellery

You aren’t allowed to wear makeup and jewellery to Tae Kwon Do and I’m sure there are many other activities that are the same. I don’t mind going without makeup or jewellery but sometimes I feel flat and boring, especially when wearing a shapeless, white suit and bare feet.

So what can you do, when you want to look a little bit less corpsey

9 Ways to look less corpsey without makeup and jewellery

  1. Focus on your skin. Exfoliate, moisturise and use eye cream.
  2. Get your eyebrows shaped and tinted and ask them to tint your lashes too
  3. Have a mani and pedi. You might not be able to wear coloured polish. But manicured nails with a clear shellac look gorgeous and clean too
  4. Get rid of the frizzy hair. Do a neat braid or updo and spray down any fly-aways
  5. Lip balm with a tint. You’re probably going to be needed a balm anyway in this weather
  6. A light scent. I have a special scent I spritz on. Now, whenever I put it on I feel like I’m ready to fight. I’d better not accidentally put it on before a big night out
  7. Brush your teeth. Clean teeth are the answer to everything
  8. Stay hydrated
  9. Accept that no-one is perfect. Everyone has freckles, wrinkles and under eye bags and if they don’t, well they probably will later in life
  10. Smile! Everyone looks better with a smile

9 Ways to look less corpsey without makeup or jewellery

What are your tips?

40 Plus Cat Eye Makeup

I did the 40+ natural makeup, now it’s time to have some fun. We don’t want to look all soft and natural all the time, sometimes we want to let our inner vixen out.

I know there is a rule about picking the eyes or the lips. I kinda agree with this….and I kinda of don’t. I love a cat eye with a nude lip but I also love it with a bright or deep lip. I think the trick is to avoid lots of colour, sparkles, glitter etc elsewhere on your face.

40 Plus Cat Eye Makeup

My makeup is very similar to the Natural makeup, just with a full coverage foundation and a little more eye makeup.

  • Create a nice even base with your favourite primer and foundation. I’m using Benefit Pore Professional followed by Chanel Lumiere. This foundation one is perfection on my skin. Not to heavy, not too light and just the right about of life so I don’t look like a lifeless store mannequin. Plus, the makeup doesn’t settle into wrinkles, crinkles and creases.
  • Concealor for dark circles – Napoleon Perdis ‘The One’. This is great for under eye shadows. PS: Don’t try to erase time with concealors. We all have circles, wrinkles etc but if you cake it on too much, you’re going to bring more attention to them, not less.
  • Eyeshadow. Brush a matt nude/sand colour across your eyelid up to the brow area. This will even out the colour of your eyelid, cover any veins and create a nice base. I’m using Cover Girl Shadow blast in Beige Blaze. This is fantastic and is a primer as well
  • Use soft brown (or grey or whatever floats your boat) eyeshadow over your eyelid. I like to bring it up and out a little and BLEND it.
  • Benefit They’re Real Eyeliner – seriously the best and easiest I have ever used. Carefully line as close to your upper lash line as closely as possible and then flick out towards the end of your eyebrow. You can make this line as thick and dramatic as you like. I usually go thinner during the day but full Winehouse at night (that may be a slight exaggeration).
  • Blush is a must! This adds a little life and colour. My current favourite is Youngblood Luminous Creme blush in Rose Quartz. Just rub a little around your apples and up your cheek bones
  • Fill in your brows. Brows make a huge difference and will balance out your eyes. I have been using a Youngblood eyebrow kit forever.
  • A little dusting of powder to set it all and help it last for the day. Face of Australis is super cheap and does the job
  • Curl your eyelashes and then use mascara. You must try Benefit They’re Real Mascara, it creates the greatest lashes without all the glue from falsies
  • Finish off with a nude lipstick or go all out with something bright or deep. I can’t leave this Issada lip crayon in Pirate alone. I have been wearing it constantly since I bought it

30 Plus Style & Beauty Link featuring Iris May

Welcome to the 30 Plus Style and Beauty link! Today we are featuring the gorgeous and stylish Bev from Iris May Style. I seriously want everything in Bev’s wardrobe. Bev always looks well put together, gorgeous, cool and comfortable. My favourite things!

30 Plus Style & Beauty Link featuring Iris May

How would your friends or family describe your style?

Classic, feminine, stylish, glamorous and maybe a touch conservative sometimes…I’ve just done a mini-survey. I can live with that though! I’m the person they always come to for fashion and styling advice which makes me very happy.

Even in junior school I was fashion obsessed – My poor mother! My favourite go-to items would be Jeans / Jackets / Shift Dresses always with Heels.

What do you have no power to resist and probably own too much of?

Shoes and Beauty Products. By golly I’m a sucker for both.

There are so many shoes in my wardrobe that I’ve hardly worn but can’t bring myself to part with. Shoes just make me happy.

Beauty products on the other hand might actually be an obsession of mine…especially anything that promises to make me look youthful with a dewy glow!

What are three things you would never be caught wearing?

Being a typical ‘pear-shaped’ girl my thighs are my nemesis so anything that emphasises them, brings me out in a cold sweat (shorty shorts have never been my friend):

Low-Rise Jeans – seriously, just seriously!
Crocs – these things need no explanation.
Strapless dresses or tops – I obviously have a ‘over-hang’ phobia!

When did you start to feel most comfortable with your style?

I remember my 30th birthday like it was yesterday. My baby girl had just celebrated her first birthday, I had lost my pre-baby weight and felt fantastic. Although I still hankered after every new style release, I started to trust my fashion radar enough not to jump in and go the whole shebang.

I started working for Monsoon in the UK when I was forty and adored being around fashion. Styling customers quickly followed and the rest as they say is history…I kind of found my vocation.

What advice would you give to your 16 year old self?

To focus on my education rather than my social life. Looking back, I should have studied harder, because I now realise I could have achieved so much more than I did. I just had no confidence in my own ability.

Reach for the stars, Bev and believe you will get there!
