Cleaning out your Wardrobe

We are moving house in one week!! Eek!

We are downsizing dramatically while we are looking for our next home to purchase. This means, I’m going to have to share the main wardrobe with my husband. WTF??!! So, last weekend I did a massive cull of my wardrobe.

Cleaning out your Wardrobe

I was completely ruthless and I created piles to throw the pieces onto:

  1. Friends and family. These are the great pieces, in good condition that I will never wear again but someone else might rock
  2. Charity. Good condition but wouldn’t suit or fit anyone I know
  3. Storage. The special pieces I wasn’t able to emotionally get rid of yet
  4. Keep. Only things I actually wear
  5. Trash. Damaged beyond repair, old, stained ripped. There was only a few, well-worn, gym pieces that fell into this category.

My underwear and bra had different criteria. Do I reach past them to more comfortable, well fitting pieces? Yes? Then out they go.

And Shoes, when was the last time I wore them. If it wasn’t in the last year then they had to go.

Once you get going it’s hard to stop. I have cleared out at least 80% of my wardrobe and I am only left with a gorgeous, simple wardrobe filled with pieces I actually wear and wear and wear. They are all well fitting and extremely comfortable. Sure I might be stuck doing repeat outfits a bit, but at least I know I’m going to love them.

When was the last time you did a huge wardrobe clean out?

A few pieces that managed to survive …

Behind the scenes: Moving on

We have Contract on our house and it’s gone unconditional. I’m not going to lie, I don’t want to leave! I have raised my babies here, had many loud dinner parties and felt safe. But some things you can’t help, and it’s time to move on. My husband has found a neat little home around the corner, so at least we’ll be in the area we love.

Behind the scenes: My Wall

I’ve accepted the change but I’m really struggling with the thought of losing my selfie wall. I love this wall. I gives good light, while protecting me from the wind and sun. It’s a great colour and doesn’t fight for attention. My wall has been my rock.

My new digs don’t have a wall … ok, it has walls but not a Wall.  Maybe it’s time to head outside but that idea freaks me out!

Do you take public outfit selfies? Did you feel crazy self conscious? Does it get better?

Here I am having a private giggle with my wall …

30+ Style & Beauty: Are you Fussy about fabric?

One thing I have noticed as I get older, is that I get fussier about the fabrics I like to wear. Previously, it didn’t matter if it felt terrible as long as it looked good (this was debatable). Sure, maybe these clothes were a little bullet proof in the washing machine and cheap as chips, but they also felt it. They felt disposable.

30+ Style and Beauty: Are you Fussy about fabric?

Over the last few years, I have become obsessed with feeling gorgeous fabrics against my skin. Not only do they feel amazing ….  they breathe …. and move. I love wearing good quality cotton and linen, wrapping myself in Bamboo and silk then snuggling into wool and cashmere. I’ve also realised you don’t always have to spend a lot, you just have to shop smart. If there is one thing I can do, it’s shop smart.

Last weekend, I invited the the gorgeous, smart and funny ladies from Bamboo Body over for afternoon tea to find our more about their range, particularly their new gorgeous Winter knits. I really love what this brand is doing. They have created a line of basics that feel incredible, fit well and move beautifully. Bamboo is also a natural, highly sustainable resource. Plus their new season knits are a combination of Bamboo, cashmere and wool. Light enough for layering and perfect for office wear.

Office Wear

I love this long line cardigan … hard. It creates an optical illusion and slims my hips by half. I seriously need this in the other 2 colours too. The rest of the outfit is Bamboo Body too. Lucia Cami, Tube skirt, and leggings.

Rich Girl Hair

Yesterday my husband asked if my latest way of wearing my hair was “Rich girl hair”. I looked at him like he was stupid, but he explained he read an article about the latest hair trend. Doubting him as I usually do, I googled it. And it’s true. The latest trend is Rich girl Hair and it’s gorgeous. Think Cara Delevingne.

Rich Girl Hair

This is clean and shiny with a gentle wave. The colour is more natural and the texture is soft. It looks like you haven’t done anything but you must have because it’s not a frizzy, matt mess.

Tips for Rich Hair Girl

  1. The hair must be healthy. So have a decent chop or regular trims
  2. Don’t overload with products, but pick the right ones. You want to hold the gentle wave, had a little shine but you want it to move when you’re in front of your wind machine taking spontaneous selfies
  3. Don’t kill your hair with colour. Just cover greys, add a little depth, warmth or highlights and then leave it alone
  4. Have regular deep treatments. I just had a Kerastase one at Beautiful You during the week and it was amazing and worth every cent

Because my hair is so fine, I have to start the curl off tighter and let it drop to a gentle wave by morning tea time. Obviously, I wasn’t born a rich girl, with rich girl hair but I’m going to be aiming for the natural, shiny, superior hair they have.

Do you have any hair goals?

It’s Fursday, Baby!

Yes, I have furry ankles. It’s almost like I’m wear 7/8 pants and haven’t shaved my legs for a while.

It’s Fursday, Baby!

I have had these furry attachments in my wardrobe for years but this could be the first time I have worn them. I tell ya, my ankles are so snuggly and warm. I think they could be a little ugly but I’m going with it. If you can’t wear them on Fursday, when can you wear them?

Are your ankles jealous or just pointing and laughing?

30+ Style & Beauty: Fursday

It’s Fursday. Which is like Thursday just a little furrier. In my office, we have decided on Thursdays we wear Faux Fur. This will be AWESOME!! It’s going to look like a freaking zoo.

30+ Style & Beauty: Fursday

I think this is the best idea ever! Until the weather starts to warm up and then it’s just stupid. I’m already starting to workshop my warm weather version … maybe Thongsday or Tubetop Tuesday. I might need to give it a little more thought.

In the mean time, Fursday is happening and it’s starting with a bang. And by bang, I mean a soft, warm, snuggly sort of muted bang.

Fursday

You want to play along? Don’t hesitate! Here is some great vests for you…

30+ Style and Beauty: How I pick my daily outfit

I get asked quite often how I pick my daily outfit. Do I organise it in advance? Is my wardrobe organised to make it easier? I wish I was that person.

How I pick my daily outfit

I usually have one item in mind that I want to wear. It’s usually something I love, something new or something I haven’t worn for a long time. I then have about 10 or 15 mins after my shower to pick the rest of my outfit and throw on some makeup and knot back my hair. I’m like a frizzy whirlwind.

I have a pretty big wardrobe, but I tend to stick to the same pieces and wear them over and over. I also try to put them together in a way I haven’t worn recently.

Like yesterday. I wanted to wear these amazing Blue Ramarim boots.

How I pick my daily outfit

I have thought of hundreds of outfits that consist mainly of denim that would work but I wanted to wear them to work. My fall back was black and blue but I had worn that colour combo the day before. White would have been beautiful too.

The wooden heel made it easy to add Khaki. It worked beautifully.  Then a chambray shirt to bring the blue back in.

I finished it off with a Khaki Anorak. I had to wear this Anorak because I felt sorry for it. I have had it for a while but always pick something else to wear instead. It’s almost invisible to my eye. I don’t know if it’s going to get another wear for a while.

30+ Style and Beauty: How I pick my daily outfit

Today I’m basing my outfit around a pair of black boots.

How do you decide on your outfit?

30+ Style and Beauty: What is in for Winter?

I’ve been waking up crazy early lately. My alarm is set for 5am, this is a dumb time but it lets me get a run in before breakfast. But my body is taking over and waking me up at 4am?? It’s dark, it’s cold and I’m grumpy. It’s another 2 hours before the sun rises!

30+ Style and Beauty: What is in for Winter?

The dark, cold mornings have made me arrive at Winter before most of sane, sleeping, snuggly people. I’m getting a taste for it and I’m so excited. Everything I look at, buy, drool over is all for next season. What I’m in love with:

Colours

Black
White
Denim
Caramel
Khaki

If I am adding anything, I stick with these colours. You can not go wrong! Wear them all together, wear them apart. Bright colours are hurting my tired eyes, so I’m rarely wearing colour  (unless I’m running) BUT this means when you do wear colour, it’s a gorgeous surprise.

Prints

I’m not big on prints at the moment. But I can not walk passed a great plaid.

Jewellery

I’m loving either a delicate layered party or one simple piece. I’m not into large, colourful statement pieces, I feel they fight for way too much attention and I’m not prepared to give it.

Shoes

MUST BE COMFORTABLE. Either Ankle boots preferably with a little (or big) heel or a pair of flats with a gentle point. My hobbit feet won’t go into any other type of point.

Hair

Under done. This could be due to extreme laziness but I’m loving the more natural hair styles and colours.

What Winter wardrobe additions are you planning?

30+ Style & Beauty: Shirt Stories

It’s no secret that I love a good shirt and I wear them about 80% of the time. My favourite of all is the classic white shirt. Because I wear shirts so often, I try to find ways to ‘mix it up’. I should be satisfied with a gorgeous white shirt, but sometimes it needs a little more … a little difference.

30+ Style & Beauty: Shirt Stories

Like yesterday.

Wearing skinny blacks and a white Bohemian Traders shirt (also known as the best shirt ever), I could be mistaken for a Waiter or Myer staff. My customer service leaves a little to be desired, so I needed to ensure, nobody asked for my assistance.

So I only buttoned the two of the shirt buttons, and wrapped the remaining loose shirt around me. I secured each side with a small safety pin to ensure then was no embarrassing, un-wrapping in the office. And then finished with the half tuck.

What do you think?

30+ Style and Beauty featuring Roxy Jacenko

Some people have amazing style, so amazing it’s slightly intimidating. Roxy Jacenko, Australian Business Women, author, celebrity, PR Queen and mother, is one of those people. Today she is sharing some of her styling tips with us. Seriously, I would love to raid her wardrobe!

30+ Style and Beauty featuring Roxy Jacenko

How would your friends or family describe your style?
Expensive – eeeek!! I like to say an eclectic mix of Tran seasonal pieces mixed with the must haves of the season.

What are your favourite tips for creating a great work wardrobe?
I generally stick with a very neutral colour palette of Navy, Black, Grey Marle and White and its not often that I deviate, a colour palette means that you can inject a ‘must have piece’ into your look and create something new out of something you may have in your wardrobe as a staple. For me right now, I love putting an Army Grey piece back with Black – even with a dress I might have had which is black and classic for ages, popping a great new jacket in a colour of the season such as army green make for a completely new look. I also feel its important to keep your wardrobe organised, If it is, its SO much easier to workshop your outfit, you also have a better idea of what you have which means you spend less money buying items you don’t need!

What items will you be hunting down to add to your Autumn/Winter wardrobe?
Anything Balmain – its my guilty pleasure. The tailoring of their jackets is phenomenal. Scanlan & Theodore’s cuts/shapes are gorgeous and their knit fabrics look fabulous on, Josh Goot is a friend and I love everything he does – especially his Black and Grey Marle items. I am also really partial to Bassike for weekend wear, the drop crotch Jeans with a simple stripe tee and a great flat always look effortlessly chic! Denim is ALWAYS a major part of my wardrobe and I have just bought two great to the calf denim skirts – perfect to dress up or down!

What is your favourite way to style a crisp white shirt?
Simply! I think there is no better look than a Crisp white shirt back with Denim. Undone with the sleeves cuffed and a great contrasting bra in Navy underneath – match that with a great bag and shoe and you look like you’ve walked off the set of a Ralph Lauren commercial! CHIC!

Have you had any style or beauty mishaps and are you prepared to share them?
Way too many! I have had every hair colour imaginable – always inspired by some Hollywood star or another (and never a great look on me) right through to that dreadful snap pants trend when I was in my teens when dressing like I was about to rob a bank in a pair, a mens oversize t-shirt and a pair of joggers was, in my eyes, so hot right now… Oh my – how NOT hot that was!!!!!!! I have certainly learnt, Less IS More!!

30+ Style and Beauty featuring Glamour Mama

Hello gorgeous people! I have been so crazy with my new schedule, I completely missed last Thursday. I woke up on Sunday and realised I hadn’t done a 30+ style and beauty link up. How is that possible? Usually I’m so great with time management. I was so angry, I pulled the cover over my head and went back to sleep for a few hours. That is angry!

Any woo to make up for it, I have the lovely, gorgeous and funny Kate from Glamour Mama featuring this week. I can’t believe I haven’t featured Kate yet. Love this girl, her blog and her style!

30+ Style and Beauty featuring Glamour Mama

Glamour Mama headshot
How would your friends or family describe your style?

I gravitate to classic, tailored clothing that flatters and feels good to touch; with a dash of sports luxe. I like to inject personality with a statement shoe or necklace; and love the drama and femininity of a full midi skirt, floaty feminine dresses in a bold print or fun colour. And there’s always a touch of glamour to make everyday outfits feel special… “classic and feminine glamour with a cool modern edge”??

What would be your dream outfit?

I’ve always struggled with casual wear. Maybe it’s a hangover from working among red carpet gowns for so long, but I’ve always had two dress codes: dressed to the nines, or pyjamas all day.

There’s no question that my dream outfit would have to be a Haute Couture Dior ball gown. Probably red and pink worn with sky high heels. Or a glittery gold fitted sheath that sparkles head to toe. I can’t decide. If I had to choose a dream casual outfit – Valentino rockstud flats, Hermes Birkin handbag in signature orange, my old ripped denim jeans, oversized cat eye sunglasses, Stella McCartney black tuxedo jacket and silk jersey striped Breton top. For those “Jarmie Days” of luxe lounging, I’m dreaming of a pair of silk pyjamas from French IT Girl Raphaella Riboud. So many outfits, so little time… I like this dream, does it have to end?

Describe your biggest beauty disaster (and do you have photographic evidence)?

Thankfully most of my beauty faux pas were made pre-Instagram and all photographic evidence has been destroyed!

My beauty crimes have been many and varied so I couldn’t possibly narrow it down to one… I’m a self confessed beauty junkie, so if there’s a product, treatment or technique, chances are I’ve tried it.

Biggest beauty blunders have included the obligatory 80’s scrunch dry and the obligatory 90’s belly ring and tattoo. A tween makeup moment featured Boy George Karma Chameleon rainbow eyeshadow attempt that resulted in my friend and I looking like Jon Benet Ramsay twins in drag. But the one that has emotionally scarred me as a teenager was when I cut my long blond curly locks. Right. Off. I was supposed to look like my then hero Olivia Newton John in the “Let’s Get Physical” film clip. But I just looked like a boy. Cried for months. DIS.A.STER.

Which bloggers inspires you and why?

There are so many amazing bloggers and I find something inspiring about each and every one of them. I love the international street style bloggers that combine high end designer with high street style – it’s a very modern and REAL way of dressing that I find both inspirational and aspirational. Some of my fave local blogs and style sites are They All Hate Us, Style by Yellow Button, The Joye, Paddo to Palmy and Inez Daily. For mummy style inspo I look to Captain & the Gypsy Kid, Not So Mumsy, BellaMumma, The Grace Tales, Fox in Flats. And of course all the gang you’ll see weekly on Redcliffe Style!

What made you decide to start blogging?

After a lifetime working in the fashion industry, then I became a Mum and pink became my new black. Whilst on maternity leave, a designer friend asked me to write some blog articles for him and I was hooked. The writing stopped my brain turning to mush and kept me connected with the fashion world whilst I was busy changing nappies. Soon friends started asking for maternity and new mum style advice; and when I realised my responses were basically blog length articles (complete with images and links) I knew I had to blog – so Glamour Mama born! I love helping mums find their style mojo and get some glamour among the goo of motherhood. Fashion and beauty are tools that to make us feel good about ourselves; and when we feel good about ourselves, we’re better mamas.

30+ Style and Beauty – Breaking Rules with double baggies

For years and years, maybe forever, I have always followed the rule of “if you have baggy up the top, you can’t wear baggy down the bottom” and visa versa. My daughters are pointing out to me constantly that I am often wearing two baggies.

30+ Style and Beauty – Breaking Rules

My current rule for getting away with two baggies are:

  1. the drape of the fabric. If they are both stiff and stick out, then no. But if they are a more relaxed fabric, then yes.
  2. tuck in the top to break up the centre
  3. show a little skin. Roll up a shirt or pants and undo a few buttons.

Do you agree, are you a rule breaker too?

30+ Style and Beauty : My work makeup products

I really love getting on my work clothes, hair and makeup each day. I’m sure there will be a time when I’m over it and the routine is just clean teeth and lipstick is just a dream. But at the moment, I love putting my ‘work face’ on each day with my favourite work makeup products.

30+ Style and Beauty : My work makeup products

These are the products I reach for every single morning at exactly 6.45am. I want to mix it up, but these are so easy, I know them and I don’t have time to play.

When I put them all out, it looks like a bucket load of makeup but, trust me, it only takes about 5 minutes and less if you don’t care about a light hand or blending.

My work makeup products

The Deets

These are in order I apply them

  • Benefit The Pore Professional
  • L’Oreal The Foundation True Match
  • Maybelline Superstay Better Skin Skin Perfecting Concealer
  • Hoola Benefit – this is a matte bronzing powder but I use it for contouring under the cheek bones, the brush is ideal. If you want some tips on contouring and highlighting. Check out this easy, peasy tutorial.
  • Face of Australia Pressed Powder – for blending the contouring and setting the makeup
  • Face of Australia Mineral Therapy Illuminator – to Illuminate, derr.
  • NARS Orgasm blush
  • Youngblog Brow Artiste in dark
  • Some Eyeliner in black I get this in Coles but I can’t remember the brand
  • Motives 1o Years Younger Makeup setting Spray – I swear by this
  • L’Oreal False Lash Wings in black
  • Carmex Moisture Plus in Pink.

How many products would be in your typical day look?

30+ Style and Beauty Link Up!

It’s Thursday, boy it sure did sneak up on me. I’m not going to lie. I haven’t been organised enough to arrange a gorgeous, inspirational style and beauty blogger today. This working full time gig sure takes up a lot of time. This slackarse-ness will improve, I promise.

30+ Style and Beauty Link Up!

I’ve been trying to get into some kind of schedule to keep me organised. This is where I’m at:

5am Wake Up
5-5.10am Walk around trying to open eyes, confused, knocking into things
5.10am – 5.45am Run
5.45-6.30am Coffee, coffee, breakfast and blogging
6.30-7.15am Shower, dress, hair makeup
7.15am-7.45am School lunches, homework, kisses, cuddles
7.45am leave for school run and work.

What’s your morning routine like?
