Melbourne Cup Day: What I am really doing and wearing

Ok, I could easily whip up a very cool outfit, take some flattering photos, head somewhere glamorous and try to make you jealous with how awesome my life is. But I won’t and I’m not.

To be perfectly honest, I love Melbourne Cup Day. I love the fashion, I love the horses and I love the excitement but I don’t love spending hours getting ready, spending too much money on horses and champagne, sore feet, and then rushing to school pick up as soon as the race finishes.

Melbourne Cup Day: What I am really doing and wearing

No, today I am doing what I really love doing. Putting on something pretty and comfortable, stopping by the TAB for the only bet I make during the year, then heading to a family BBQ, sitting outside with people I love, listening to the gentle waves across the road and the TV buzzing in the background.

What I’m wearing

I’m wearing a new season dress from Bohemian Traders. I made it dressier by tying a knot in the front. This creates a waist and makes it a little shorter but also brings it down a little to show off more cleavage. I’m wearing it with a super old, cheap gold fascinator, my beloved tan wedges and a tan clutch.

  1. I love what you’ve done with the dress! You look beautiful. I’m at home looking after a sick Esther but I placed a $10 bet online and will watch the race while they nap! :)

  2. Lisa Mckenzie says:

Nothing I’m not really into the Melbourne cup and I did grocery shopping exciting hey x

  3. You look absolutely gorgeous :) Love what you’ve done with the dress and the fascinator is sweet. I think what you’re doing sounds lovely. I’m home alone with a flu virus. The soft lap of waves, and a family barbie would be lovely if I could get it!

  4. Love the knot detail you’ve created on the dress. Then again, I do love me some cleavage so that goes without saying.
I’m at work today. We stopped for an hour to enjoy a cheese platter that I put together and drink a bottle of champers I went and bought. And then I won 1st AND 3rd in the office sweep, so I consider that a sweet victory!

  5. The knot, awesome!

I’m at home tending to the sick. I did dress up and pretend for a split second. xx

  6. Gorgeous Rachel. We had a low key but fun day with three other families from our kids’ school. BBQ, sprinkler action, plenty of laughs and some pav made it a fun day. For a change the weather co-operated too!
Love your tradition and outfit today too. x

  7. Oh you look gorgeous! I love that dress! I was at work but insisted on stopping my grammar lesson to show my students the race. Like it or loathe it, I figure it’s very Australian.

  8. You are SO clever!!! Love this so much. Will certainly do this. xS

  9. Love love love your little video and I’m definitely going to try that out myself!

  10. How clever is the knot!! I love it! I watched the race outside a pub, then raced to school to pick up my son and then I met up with my friend at the beach. My kids played and we drank some bubbles. Was lovely! xx

  11. You HAVE whipped up a very cool outfit! And you look totally glamourous. I love this dress and I love your fascinator too! My excitement was a little off the charts when I bet $10 on the winning horse. Hey, it was a $10 bet, but I won something! x

  12. What a great idea, tying a knot in a loose dress to create a waist!

  13. Hi, I found your blog through 40+ Style. I had a work function at The Ivy in Sydney. Great day had by all. Link below to what I wore.
