What I did to buy a Cavoodle

8pm Friday night, three years ago. I was sitting up alone, the girls were fast asleep and my husband was OS on business.

I had put my beloved Foxie down 3 months earlier and I was missing him. The world was too quiet. There was no clickity-clack of foxie paws following me. There was no little buddy when I would drop my hand to pat his smooth little head.

I decided to start research into dogs. One day I would be ready to move on. It might be years, but the girls were a good age for a puppy and it would be their dog. I could never love another.

So I ask Google

‘Great dog for children’

‘Best dog for kids’

‘Family friendly, non-shed dog’

The answers kept coming back CAVOODLE. A friend of a friend had one, but I didn’t know much about them. I thought I’d check out this Cavoodle.

The first photo I came across was this….

What I did to buy a Cavoodle

8.30pm I thought ‘Cavoodles are cute but how much do they cost?‘. I noticed they were located nearby and wrote the kennel a little email through their website “Hey, cute dog, How much?

8.45pm Kennel Reply. WTF?? Someone is working late Friday night? “She is $895 and I have only just put up the photo. Someone else bought her, but had an emergency operation tonight and they can’t take her any longer

Me: What $895??!! for a dog “Oh, that’s sad, I might drop in a see her tomorrow, what are your hours

9pm┬áKennel Reply. ‘She’ll be gone. Cavoodles are very popular and full amount must be paid to hold

Me: checking bank balance $.05, looking in purse $1.25, hand down couch $0. Calculating I’m $893.70 short

9.15pm Email husband in different time zone ‘I want this puppy’ ……*crickets*

9.30pm Messaging photo and story to enabler, their response ‘You must get this puppy, here’s my credit card if you want to pay me back

9.45pm Deep thinking, looking at puppy photo, email husband ‘You must stop me or I WILL buy a puppy‘…….*crickets*

10pm Email Kennel ‘I’ll take her’

9am Saturday Arrive at kennel, phone ringing off the hook ‘No sorry, that Cavoodle is sold

Then I sold my Metalicus collection and made $1000 within a week and paid back my enabler. The best $895 I ever spent. The moral of the story. Metalicus holds it’s value.

  1. Best story ever.

  2. oh gosh. so cute. sounds like a good dog for when we go down that path. Nick is constantly asking for a puppy, asking santa, blowing out candles and wishing for a puppy….he’s a great age to have one, too….oh dear, if I end up with a cavoodle this weekend, it will be YOUR FAULT! The enabler title has been passed on obviously.

  3. That is a super story. It was obviously meant to be! :)

  4. And I bet you’ve never regretted it for a second!

  5. Oh bless your little cavoodle socks! x

  6. What a gorgeous story!

  7. Aww so cute! We found our dog by sheer fluke – dream cross of breeds we’d never seen before (and haven’t seen since). It was only because I missed a bus that we got her :)

  8. I love this story so much, it squeezed my heart! We lost our cat earlier this year and finally, after nearly 9 years of being together, my husband said we could get a puppy. I had wanted a Shetland Sheepdog since first locking eyes on them several years earlier. 2 phone calls later, we were going to be puppy owners! As soon as we saw the 3 little fluffballs running around, we knew immediately which one was ours – the smallest one with the biggest personality. And now Amalfi is part of our family and has added an extra layer of love to our life.

  9. Rachel,

Loved your story. I am desperate to find a ‘nice looking’ cavoodle for my family. Can you please help, by telling me where you purchased yours from? I am told that most breeders are puppy farms?
I am running out of time, as I wanted it to be a Christmas present

    Your help would be appreciated

    Emma :)

  10. LOVE HER

  11. How gorgeous!
My little Molly is a rescue dog – she was free to good home but we saw a fair few dogs before her and she was just so beautiful and still is. She loves us and the kids and wants nothing more than to be loved in return <3

  12. So cute. 20 years ago I sold my set of golf clubs so I could buy a $1000 English Mastiff puppy. Barnsey was the best dog anyone could ever ask for. But SOOO BIG! Now I’m older I have a miniature Schnoodle (Schnauzer/Poodle), Sydney, who is now the best dog anyone could ever ask for. He was purchased on a long weekend my husband was overseas….

  13. Great story. We have two cavoodles, Charlie and Lola. I went to the shopping centre to get my phone fixed, discovered it was unfixable, so went and looked at puppies instead. It was an expensive day….

  14. Loved reading your story, we’ve connected on Instagram but love hearing how you came about getting your Cavoodle love it.

  15. Lisa Mckenzie says:

Your Lola is gorgeous and meant to be living at your house that’s for sure I have a mini foxie and they are the most loving dogs I will miss him so much when he is not with us anymore but I get you about the no shedding of fur my grey carpet is covered in white fur!

  16. Jenni from Styling Curvy says:

I love this Rachel! I had a similar experience. After saying for years that we would never get a dog I found myself yearning for one. On Father’s Day we went to see the movie ‘Red Dog’ and while walking from the Westfield I stopped in the pet shop and spied some pups. Yes I know a pet store…whip me now LOL 4 nights later we found ourselves back at the same shopping centre and ten minutes before closing we checked in on the pet store and I asked for a hold. Oh my goodness, it was love at first snuggle! We headed home with my hubby scoffing at the $650 price tag…”for a dog”. I dreamt about puppy all night and called the store at 8am….borrowed the money from my son’ scar account until next payday, gave the kids the day off school and we went to pick up our Harvey…with add ons $1000 later. HANDS DOWN BEST DECISION EVER. We adore him and he is our third child (with fur) x

    • I love this story too! I was also against Pet store dogs and have always had rescue dogs but Pet Store puppies need love too. I couldn’t bring myself to watch Red Dog. I was worried I’d cry.

  17. Unlike most others on this forum, I don’t find this story ‘lovely’ at all. If you are planning on getting a dog, it should NOT be from a pet shop or online advertisement. You should be asking the REGISTERED breeder a stack of important questions and insisting on seeing where the puppy has been raised and meeting its mother at least, if not its father too. No decent, reputable breeder who actually cares about dogs is going to hand over a puppy to someone without asking many questions about the home the puppy is going to. It infuriates me that so many people are so ignorant about puppy farms, or so willing to turn a blind eye, just so that they can get their “designer dog”, without caring where the dog has come from. Do you have any idea how many innocent dogs are currently living in filthy, squalid conditions, without any love or attention, just so puppy farmers can make a dollar? And you’ve supported that disgusting industry. Not lovely at all. A dog is a lifetime commitment, and the decision should be well researched and considered, not an impulsive one influenced by alcohol consumption.
